David Hanan, Ph.D.
Lecturer/Associate Director Bands
Dr. David Hanan serves as the University of Central Oklahoma’s Associate Director of Bands and Adviser to Esports at UCO where guides and directs the UCO Stampede of Sound Marching Band as well as the UCO basketball Pep Band. He serves as the conductor of the UCO Symphonic Band, teaches instrumental conducting, secondary instrumental music methods, and marching band technique courses. He also serves as the faculty sponsor for UCO’s chapter of Collegiate National Association for Music Education (CNAfME).
Dr. Hanan received a Bachelor’s degree in music education from Missouri Western State University, a Master’s degree in trumpet performance from the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education from the University of Oklahoma. He has been a member of the Saint Joseph Symphony (1993 – 1995) as well as a performer with the Kansas City Philharmonia (1992 - 1995). Dr. Hanan is an active clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor throughout the Southwest region.
Dr. Hanan is extremely active in the Esports ecosystem. As acting Director of Esports at UCO, he is currently developing the following: Journalism and Shoutcasting minor degree with the college of Mass Communication, an Esports Business Management with the College of Business, a Gaming Analysis minor degree with the Department of Philosophy, and an Esports coaching certification with the College of Education. Dr. Hanan is overseeing a 7,000 square foot Esports facility project, on the UCO campus, with an anticipated completion date of May 1, 2020. Additionally, Dr. Hanan serves as an advisory board member for the National Association of Esports Coaches and Directors.
Dr. Hanan is a member of the Oklahoma Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Education, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He was honored as the “Swigeart Continuing Lectureship Award” recipient from the College of Fine Arts and Design of UCO. Dr. Hanan was selected as the overall Grand Prize Winner of the 2015 UCO EXCEL Award, which is awarded to a UCO faculty member who creatively exemplifies the use of the Brightspace by D2L (Desire 2 Learn) product tools. His most recent class creation, The History of Video Game Music, has received a national nomination for the 2015 Brightspace Excellence International award. Dr. Hanan is currently conducting research in the area of work engagement among university music education faculty.
