Research Currently in Progress
"Auditor Attributes Influencing Red Flag Effectiveness in Detecting Fraud" (Writing Results).
"Financial Ratio Analysis, the Statement of Cash Flows, and Common-Sized Cash Flow-based Ratios" (Writing Results).
This paper presents an approach to financial ratio analysis that utilizes the information provided by the statement of cash flows to supplement and enhance the extant financial analysis tools. The paper will propose common-size methodology as an initial framework for financial analysis using the statement of cash flows. Common size ratios are constructed by displaying specific financial terms as a percentage of its category, such as net income as a percent of sales or common equity as a percent of total assets. The value of common size analysis is to compare a firm’s performance over differing time periods or to competitors or industry standards.
"Hedging and Shale Production: Building Shareholder Value or Optimizing for Entrenched Management?" (Writing Results).
"Perceptions and Concerns of Risk Managers Regarding the Mitigation of Terrorist Events".
The purpose of this research is to ascertain the perceptions of risk management leaders and professionals regarding terrorism, to identify risk managers’ perceptions concerning terrorist threats, to develop methods for enhancing resilience through the risk management industry, to propose a model to promote and mitigate the prevention of, and protection, from terrorism, and to raise awareness and share best practices within the risk management industry.
"The Optimization of Long-Term Care Insurance for Families with a History of Alzheimer’s Disease" (On-Going).
This paper is an investigation of the financial decisions faced by families with a history of Alzheimer’s disease and will propose indicators to be considered in the optimization of purchasing long-term care insurance.
Teaching Philosophy
My personal philosophy of teaching is that true learning takes place when a student is motivated and engaged to learn about a topic, master the skills required to manage and manipulate the subject’s specific relational principles and pertinent data, incorporate the critical thinking and analysis process necessary to apply and integrate the newly learned knowledge and skills into broader applications and environments, and to assess and evaluate, and if necessary modify, the effectiveness and efficacy of their newly learned knowledge and skills in order to replicate and further enhance the entire learning process. I feel a personal responsibility to create an environment that fosters this level of learning.
I recognize that every university student is unique, with varied backgrounds and learning styles. I strive to reach all of them, individually and collectively, and encourage their participation in classroom discussions, their completion of assigned work, and their involvement in professional development through mentoring and networking opportunities at student organizations' meetings.
In every class I teach, and in every syllabus I prepare, I want my students to understand all the course requirements and my expectations for their successful completion of the requisite components. I spend a considerable amount of time tutoring students in my office and advising them on their course schedules and career objectives. I consider my participation in the UCO Actuary & Insurance Club and taking students to academic and professional conferences as teaching and mentoring opportunities that not only enhance and enrich their learning, but also significantly impact my own personal and professional development, thereby helping me to become a more focused and effective educator.
