About

My teaching and research interest area is solid mechanics, biomaterials and additive manufacturing, specifically electrospun nanofiber manufacturing and application technologies for improving the biological performances of implant materials. I have developed 7 mechanical engineering (ME) courses  for UCO's and 2 ME courses for Texas Tech University mechanical engineering program. I have mentored three post-doctoral, 18 graduate, and more than 100 undergraduate research assistants. I have continuously received several state and university grants to fund the student research projects. I am an author of 26 peer-reviewed journal articles and presented more than 100 conference articles/abstracts, where mainly undergraduate and graduate students are co-authors. I am an inventor of five granted patents. I have collaborated with faculties and clinicians from UCO and other state universities, local industries, and hospitals. I am a recipient of USA full bright award. I have received several merit awards in the excellence of teaching and research from UCO due to my contribution in research and scholar activities.

Ongoing Research projects

1. Department of Veterans Affairs/ Pilot Project Award,                          Role: PI, 10/01/2019 – 03/31/2021

“Development of core laboratory for traumatic brain injury studies in mice.”

This project will develop an experimental setup of the mouse model to simulate a shock wave exposure, guided by the experimental measurements of mice subjected to shock loading conditions corresponding to that of mild and moderate traumatic brain injury in a field-validated shock tube. This project will provide us an understanding of the mechanisms of primary blast injury from blast exposures.

 

2. PRESBYTERIAN HEALTH FOUNDATION/ PHF TEAM SCIENCE GRANT                    Role: PI, 07/01/20-06/30/21

3D printed tissue engineered nanofiber scaffold with mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of articular cartilage osteochondral defects”   

The aim of this project is to design a 3D printed tissue engineered nanofiber scaffold with mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) for the treatment of OCLs in an articular cartilage defect model of rabbit knee.

 

3. OSU-CVM Seed Grant Proposal                                                                       Role: co-PI, 07/01/20-012/31/21

In vivo evaluation of laser-microgrooved bone anchors.”        

The proposed study evaluates a novel implant surface treatment for a future strategy of delivering facilitative molecules to the bone-implant interface.

 

4. EXAKT Technology Inc. (Industry grant)          Role: PI, 09/01/20-08/31/21

Aerosol Containment study of pathology Band Saw”  

Containment of dust during cutting of pathology samples is environment and health safety issue. This project measures the level of aerosol dust formation from EXAKT 302 band saw and compared the values with a butcher saw.

 

5. NIH/OKINBRE Mini                                                                                               Role: co-PI, 05/01/21-04/30/21

Incorporation of mycobacteriophages in electrospun nanofiber”          

Bacteriophages have been shown to be effective in eradicating biofilms within the wound site and in chronic wound infections. This project will allow us to improve already desirable nanofibrous dressing by incorporate mycobacteriophages that can be used in treating wound infections commonly caused by M. abscessus.

 

6. University of Central Oklahoma On-campus Interdisciplinary faculty grant Program, Role: PI,  08/15/20-05/01/21

Measurement of Tissue Response due to Blast and Impact Loading on Mice.”                      

This project will develop histopathological protocols using mice for a single exposure to understand the effect of TBI on the injury pathways and computer model to simulate a shock wave exposure in a field-validated shock tube model.

 

7. University of Central Oklahoma CURE STEM award                   Role: PI           08/15/19-06/01/20

Interface tissue engineering research”                                                                                                                                                                                                                    

The goal of this research is to develop or improve hard tissue fixation implants that have the ability of directing cellular responses between the host tissue and implant, and maintaining long-term functionality in vivo. The study will evaluate the effects of nanofiber treatment on titanium to the interfacial strength of titanium/PMMA and titanium/bone interfaces.
