Stephanie Canada-Phillips, Ph.D.

About
Stephanie Canada-Phillips, Ph.D., currently is an assistant professor at the University of Central Oklahoma in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies and serves as the Physical Education Teacher Education Program coordinator. From 2003-08, she taught physical education at Will Rogers Elementary School in Shawnee, Oklahoma. While teaching elementary physical education, she earned her National Board Teacher Certification in Physical Education Early to Middle Childhood. During this time, she was named Will Rogers Elementary Teacher of the Year and Shawnee Public School District Teacher of the Year. From there she went on to be named the 2008 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year and served as Oklahoma’s Ambassador to Teaching. In 2009, Canada-Phillips became a Washington Teaching Ambassador Fellow at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, DC, where she worked with educators from across the country on policy and support concerning teacher leadership. Upon returning to Oklahoma, Canada-Phillips began working in higher education while completing her Ph.D. at the University of Oklahoma in Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum.
Canada-Phillips is actively engaged as a professional member at the state, regional, and national levels of SHAPE America. She is a Past Oklahoma Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (OAHPERD) President (2014), and continues to serve the OAHPERD Board and Council as the Communications Director. Canada-Phillips currently serves as the Oklahoma National and State Teachers of the Year Chapter President. She has served as a SHAPE America Southern District, Leadership Council as a Member at Large, and Professional Development coordinator. She also worked as a SHAPE America Physical Activity Leader Trainer and has served on various state regional and national committees to promote and support quality physical education and physical activity. Most notably, she has served as a committee member in the development of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in Physical Education (Second Edition, 2014). Canada-Phillips worked as the program manager for the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Physical Education Committee and the subsequent curriculum framework development committee. Recently she worked with the Center for Curriculum Redesign participating in their Context in Competencies Study for the 21st Century Learner.
