Adjunct Instructor

University of Central Oklahoma

My name is Dr. Elsa John.  I am a graduate of the English medical program at the University of Debrecen Medical and Health Sciences Center in Debrecen, Hungary.  I had the privilege of being in central Europe for the duration of my studies which allowed me to experience various languages and cultures.  I had many unique personal experiences including traveling to many countries like Ukraine, Romania for medical mission trips.  I was involved with the local church for many years and participated in many local outreach and community events in Debrecen.  It has been many years, but my heart is still quite fond of this city and country and look forward to one day taking my children there to visit.

I've been married to my husband for 14 years whom I met in my premed year of medical school in Debrecen. I am privileged to be a mom of two precious children, an 8-year-old girl, and a 1 1/2 old boy.

Education and Certifications

I have a Medical Doctorate.  I am currently enrolled in a Master's of Healthcare Administration program.

Classes Taught

Over the past eleven years I have taught Human Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Medical Terminology among other minor courses.

I love to read, watch movies and spend time with my family.  I greatly appreciate theater and art.

Professional and Community Involvement

I am involved in my church in the worship ministry, children's ministry, youth ministry, and women's ministry.  I have been a part of health fairs and other outreaches in the surrounding communities.  I have been on multiple medical mission trips over the years with Haiti and Kenya being the most recent.

I am involved in my daughter's school, Oklahoma Christian School (OCS), and serve with other parents in their parent organization.

Teaching Philosophy

I love the art of teaching, but I also love learning.  I believe that we are all students and we can all learn from each other.  Each person I encounter may have something to contribute to the advancement of my knowledge.  I appreciate and encourage class interaction and participation.  Each individual is a unique learner and sometimes what works for one may not work for another so creativity is important in presenting and understanding subject matter.  I enjoy seeing curiosity build and questions being raised about the topic being covered.  The ultimate goal as an instructor is to see students take the information in print and begin to apply it to their bodies or life situations.
