For University of Central Oklahoma student Taylor Egger, spending a semester in South Korea this upcoming academic year will be more than just studying abroad - it will complete a longtime dream.

The sophomore international business major is the recipient of the highly competitive national Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year.

Egger, a native of Guthrie, has never traveled outside of the United States. New passport in hand, Egger said she is excited to experience the Korean culture, taste the food, and visit nearby countries.

“I feel so fortunate to have been given this amazing opportunity. I am interested to see how the people of South Korea live and what the country has to offer,” said Egger.

As a student at Central, Egger is an active member of Delta Zeta sorority, the “To Write Love on Her Arms” organization, and Broncho Buddies, which pairs domestic UCO students with international students at the university to foster friendships and cultural exchanges.

With her scholarship, worth $5,000, Egger will leave in August for Seoul, South Korea where she will study international business at Hanyang University in South Korea.

Egger said she chose to apply for the scholarship because she wanted to have experience traveling abroad. “Being an international business major, there is something to be said for having a travel abroad experience. I want to immerse myself into different cultures and meet new people.”

Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the U.S. Department of State, the Gilman Scholarship Program aims to diversify the types of students who study abroad and the regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints.
