At the University of Central Oklahoma’s Endeavor Games for Athletes with Physical Disabilities June 6-9, four athletes qualified for the 2014 World Championships in the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) powerlifting competition.

The qualifying athletes include Trevor Bunch from O’Fallon, Mo.; who is making his World Championships debut; Scott Danberg from Cooper City, Fla., a five-time Paralympian; Bryce Segura from New Iberia, La., who is competing in his first World Championships; and Mary Stack from Ann Arbor, Mich., a four-time Paralympian.

Along with these athletes, four other powerlifters qualified for the World Championships in February at the IPC powerlifting competition during the Bart and Nadia Sports and Health Festival in Oklahoma City. These athletes include Chelsi Figley from Columbiana, Ohio; Jacob Schrom from Carlisle, Pa.; Ahmed Shafik from Tucson, Ariz.; and Joe Wittcamp from Jackson, Ohio.

“We are very proud of our powerlifting athletes and honored to have them represent the U.S. at the 2014 World Championships,” said Kim Stuck, Central’s powerlifting coordinator.

These eight athletes together make up the largest team that has represented the United States at the World Championships.

The 2014 World Championships will take place next April in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Central is an official U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site. Athletes can train for Olympic volleyball and archery and any Paralympic sport at the university. Currently, Central hosts 16 resident athletes in the Paralympic sports of sitting volleyball, archery, and track and field.

Though no athletes currently train in the sport at Central, the university hosts several IPC powerlifting events throughout year.
