From finding balance and strength through barre fusion or Tai Chi to defending oneself on the street or the dance floor, the University of Central Oklahoma’s Wellness Center will offer a variety of instructional fitness programs this fall to help community members, along with faculty, staff and students, get fit.

Instructional programs are non-credit fitness classes taught by certifed instructors that provide personal enrichment, training, and skill building that are intensive in nature.

“Barre Fusion,” Wednesdays 4-4:50 p.m., Sept. 4-Oct. 9, offers a total body program that combines the disciplines of ballet, yoga, and Pilates and focuses on improving balance, stability, and core strength. Registration deadline is Aug. 30.

“Chi Gong, Tai Chi, and Aikido,” Mondays 4-5 p.m., Sept. 9-Oct. 28, provides an outlet for mindfulness and stress management through the ancient martial arts. Registration deadline is Sept. 5.

“Jiu-jitsu,” Mondays 7:30-9:30 p.m., Sept. 16-Oct. 17, teaches participants the art of self-defense while utilizing grappling techniques, pins, join locks, and throws.  Registration deadline is Sept. 12.

“Eras of Dance: 1920s to Today,” 6:30-7:30 p.m., Sept. 29-Nov. 3, explores social dancing through various eras—from the speakeasy and swing of the jazz age to today’s line dances and hip hop. Registration deadline is Sept. 26.

“We want to give everyone involved with Central and the surrounding community the opportunity to achieve personal health and fitness from different experiences,” said Brittney Criswell, health promotion coordinator at Central.

“Instructional fitness classes provide the Central and Edmond community the opportunity to engage in unique fitness programs that provide an encouraging and motivating atmosphere.”

All fitness levels are encouraged to participate in all instructional programs.

To register, visit and select “Instructional Programs.” Pre-registration is required for all instructional programs.  Fees vary based on the class.
