The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music will present a performance by assistant professor of trumpet Ryan Sharp at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 3 at the UCO Jazz Lab, 100 E. Fifth Street in Edmond.

This concert is a part of the Faculty Artist Concert Series, a yearlong performances series that highlights the talents of Central music faculty members.  All performances take place on Tuesday’s at 7:30 p.m. at the Jazz Lab with proceeds supporting scholarships and the UCO School of Music.

Now in his second year teaching at Central, Sharp has participated internationally in concerts, festivals and masters classes in Japan, Canada and throughout Europe.

Sharp also spent two years as the lead trumpeter for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus, where he traveled and performed across the United States and Mexico.

The first half of Sharp’s performance will consist of solo trumpet repertoire accompanied by Central professor of piano Sallie Pollack.

Members of the Kansas City-based Fountain City Brass Band will join Sharp on stage for the second half of the concert.

“I played with these guys when I lived in Kansas City and they are just great,” said Sharp.

“They have a unique British brass band style that’s dictated by conical bore instruments, which produce a warm and rich sound.”

The Fountain City Brass Band includes a variety of professors and professional performers from Kansas City, Arkansas and the Indianapolis area. The visiting members of the band will offer free, open-to-the-public master classes from 1-4 p.m., Sept. 2 and from 1-4:30 p.m., Sept 3 at the UCO Jazz Lab.

Tickets for the performance are $10 and can be purchased by calling the UCO School of Music at 405-974-5004.  Admission is free for Central students, faculty and staff with a Central I.D.
