UCO Students Win at Oklahoma Collegiate Media Awards

UCO STUDENTS WIN AT OKLAHOMA COLLEGIATE MEDIA AWARDS

The staff of The Vista, the University of Central Oklahoma’s student newspaper, took home seven awards at the Oklahoma Collegiate Media Awards (OCMA) held April 4 at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. Central’s students competed against entries from 11 other colleges and universities in the state.           

"The students’ success is exactly why we are here. It is a great satisfaction to work with this type of talent, watch it grow and see the results. I am truly grateful to be able to be surrounded by students with good character, work ethic and dedication,” said Teddy Burch, director of student publications at Central.

The 2014 award winners are as follows:

  • Natalie Cartwright, junior professional media student, third place in investigative reporting for “Bakery Bluffs,” which looked into the origins of baked goods in popular bakeries and restaurants;
  • Adam Holt, senior journalism student, second place in editorial for his commentary on the NRA;
  • Evan Oldham, senior graphic design student, first place in editorial cartoon for his cartoon, “The Do’s and Don’ts of Free Speech”;
  • Quang Pho, junior photographic arts student, first place in sports photography for his work on rodeo in Edmond’s Liberty Fest; first place in feature photography for “The Face of the Homeless”;
  • Cyn Sheng, senior photographic arts student, second place in feature photography for his series “A Look at Jarrett Tryon’s Game Day”; and
  • Aliki Dyer, junior photographic arts student, third place in feature photography for “A Glance of Colorful Talent.”

The Vista was established in 1903 as the student newspaper of the University of Central Oklahoma and is the longest continually published student newspaper in the state. To learn more or read the current issue, visit www.ucentralmedia.com.
