UCO RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY AS ‘BEST FOR VETS’ IN OKLAHOMA

The Military Times ranked the University of Central Oklahoma among the “Best for Vets: Colleges 2015” on their annual list. Central ranks 40th among all surveyed four-year colleges and universities in the U.S., and is the highest ranked in Oklahoma.

Central’s “Best for Vets” ranking is a result of evaluating many factors that make a university a good fit for service members, military veterans and their families. Factors include services, special rules, accommodations and financial incentives offered to military and veteran students, as well as veteran culture on campus.

“We factor in what is, to our knowledge, the most detailed school-by-school data on veteran students’ academic success anywhere, including graduation, retention, persistence and course completion rates,” said Amanda Miller, editor of “Best for Vets.”

“By recognizing only the schools that do the most, we believe we’re helping to raise the bar in veteran student services.”

The recognition from Military Times comes on the heels of Central’s third consecutive designation as a Military Friendly School by Victory Media, a strong indication of the university’s commitment to its veterans.

A variety of campus offices and organizations support Central’s veterans, including Veteran Student Support (VSS), which oversees all veteran-related services at the university, Veterans Affairs, which assists with support specific to the GI Bill, and the Veterans Higher Education Resource Office (VetHERO), which provides personalized service to veteran students and their dependents by coordinating services to address the academic, financial, mental, physical and social needs of veterans and veteran-dependent students.

“The Office of Veteran Student Support and VetHERO have worked very hard to highlight the outstanding programs that UCO has available for our veterans and their families,” said Kennan Horn, manager of VSS at Central.

“UCO has a ton of momentum going into next year, having already won two additional veteran-related grants. UCO’s leadership is incredibly supportive of all our veteran initiatives and that makes me very proud to work here and be a part of this success.”
