UCO JOURNALISM PROFESSOR HONORED BY STATE PRESS ASSOCIATION

The Oklahoma Press Association (OPA) has recognized University of Central Oklahoma journalism professor Terry M. Clark, Ed.D., with the H. Milt Phillips Award, the association’s highest honor. Clark is only the second professor selected for the annual award since its inception in 1978.

Clark, the former owner of the Waurika News-Democrat, joined Central’s faculty in 1990. His more than 20 years of experience in journalism includes posts at The Duncan Banner, The Oklahoman and The Journal Record.

“Terry has spent his career transforming students into journalists, then maintaining professional relationships with them throughout their own careers.  His contributions to the department have been immeasurable,” said Mary Carver, Ph.D., chair for UCO’s Department of Mass Communication.

In addition to his work in newspapers and in training the next generation of journalists, Clark was honored for his years of service as director of the UCO-based Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame, as a trustee for the Oklahoma Newspaper Foundation, and as an OPA workshop director and columnist.

The OPA board of directors selects the H. Milt Phillips Award recipient based on publishing a high-quality newspaper; contribution to the profession and the newspaper industry; years of service to the community, state and nation in a variety of volunteer activities; and strong love and dedication to the family.

The association presented Clark with the award during its annual convention held June 10-11 in Oklahoma City.
