UCO TO HOST AUTHOR OF ‘UGLY’ FOR LECTURE

The University of Central Oklahoma College of Education and Professional Studies (CEPS) will host Australian author Robert Hoge for a lecture on his memoir “Ugly” at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 9 in the UCO Education Building, Room 101.

The memoir’s name echoes Hoge’s experience as a boy born with a giant tumor on his forehead, distorted facial features and “twisted, useless legs.”

“We are glad to host Mr. Hoge in the beginning stages of his North American book tour,” said James Machell, Ph.D., CEPS dean.

“Guests can learn about the rejections Mr. Hoge has faced in his own life and how he has overcome them, as well as how his story can help them.”

A question-and-answer session moderated by Scott Singleton, Ph.D., associate psychology professor at UCO, will follow the lecture. “Ugly” will be available for sale at the event.

Hoge has worked as a journalist, speechwriter, science communicator and political adviser. He is interested in disability advocacy and social engagement. He carried the Olympic torch in 2000 when the games were in Sydney, Australia. He lives in Brisbane, Australia with his wife and two daughters.

The event is hosted by CEPS, Best of Books and UCO’s Student Transformative Learning Record (STLR).

Though the event is free, an RSVP is required. Children accompanied by adults welcome. To RSVP, visit http://www.uco.edu/ceps/events/robert-hoge.asp.
