UCO Invites All to the Grand Opening of the Mitchell Education Center

The University of Central Oklahoma College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD) will host the grand opening of the Mitchell Education Center – a 17,000 square-foot addition to the historic Mitchell Hall Theatre – starting at 1 p.m. Aug. 31 in the auditorium of Mitchell Hall Theatre on campus.

“This project has been a longtime vision of the college – matching the backstage amenities of the university’s performance venue to the high quality of arts education and entertainment opportunities provided on campus,” said Deborah Baucom, executive director of development at Central.

The event will start with a theatrical ribbon cutting at 1 p.m. in the auditorium of Mitchell Hall Theatre and then continue with tours of the new addition from 1:30-3:30 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served.

The build-out, designed by Elliott + Associates Architects, includes two new rehearsal spaces, dressing rooms, classrooms, a green room, a full costume shop, make-up lab, an open gallery, indoor and outdoor student study lounges, faculty offices and a storm shelter that can hold more than 700 people.

“This new Mitchell Education Center is living proof that the principles that guided the founding of the first college in the Oklahoma Territories are alive and well today,” said Steven Lee Hansen, M.F.A., dean of CFAD.

“It will allow our unique programs to grow and thrive, provide a home for our performing arts students and allow us to continue the tradition of educational excellence that is the hallmark of UCO.  We are excited to share the opening of this cutting-edge facility with our community, leadership and the generous donors who enabled the realization of this important center for arts education in Oklahoma.”
