UCO’s Broadway Tonight Series Begins New Season with Branford Marsalis Quartet Performance

The University of Central Oklahoma Broadway Tonight Series will begin the 2017-18 season with a performance by the Branford Marsalis Quartet at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at the historic Mitchell Hall Theatre on the Edmond campus.

Three-time Grammy Award winner Branford Marsalis has continued to exercise and expand his skills as an instrumentalist, a composer and the head of Marsalis Music.

“The Marsalis brothers have been instrumental in bringing jazz back to its roots, while also having a wide commercial appeal for a modern audience,” said Greg White, Ph.D., director of the UCO Broadway Tonight Series.

“We are honored to have this jazz legend open our 2017-18 Broadway Tonight season. There are many jazz artists out there who can play a beautiful line, but when Mr. Marsalis plays, he tells a story.”

From his early acclaim as a saxophonist, bringing new energy and new audiences to the jazz art, he has refined and expanded his talents and his horizons as a musician, composer, bandleader and educator.

During Marsalis’s UCO visit, he will also host a master class that is open and free for UCO students at the UCO Jazz Lab.

“Branford Marsalis is one of the most significant jazz artists on the planet today,” explained Brian Gorrell, head of the Jazz Studies Division.

“He is strongly opinionated about the direction of American music and the music industry in general, so we expect a dynamic and engaging master class session at the Jazz Lab that afternoon.”

The 2017-18 Broadway Tonight Series season is supported, in part, by the Oklahoma Arts Council, which receives support from the State of Oklahoma and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tickets for the Branford Marsalis Quartet are $45 and, along with season subscriptions to the UCO Broadway Tonight Series, can be purchased online at www.mitchellhalltheatre.com or through the Mitchell Hall Box Office at 405-974-3375.
