Oklahoma A+ Schools at UCO to Receive $45,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) recently announced it will award a $45,000 Art Works grant to Oklahoma A+ Schools at the University of Central Oklahoma, in an effort to help educators systematically integrate the arts in new schools entering the A+ Schools network.

The Art Works category is the NEA’s largest funding category and supports projects that focus on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts and the strengthening of communities through the arts.

“It is energizing to see the impact that the arts are making throughout the United States. These NEA-supported projects, such as this one to Oklahoma A+ Schools, are good examples of how the arts build stronger and more vibrant communities, improve well-being, prepare our children to succeed and increase the quality of our lives,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “At the National Endowment for the Arts, we believe that all people should have access to the joy, opportunities and connections the arts bring.”

The project funded by this grant will build and sustain the capacity of teachers to make arts learning part of each day for every child by providing ongoing support to participating new schools. The schools, chosen at a later date, will commit to the OKA+ three-year implementation process. OKA+ Schools' staff and A+ Fellows will engage teachers in the first-year implementation process during a summer institute, as well as site-specific and ongoing training needed to embed quality arts integration into each school and a link to the larger A+ network of over 70 active pre-K-12 schools in Oklahoma. These new schools will build a community of learners committed to the A+ Essentials' framework, assuring that their students receive appropriate, creative instruction that connects arts and non-arts learning objectives.

“We are so pleased to receive an Art Works grant to ensure that teachers and students in Oklahoma are receiving quality training and instruction in the arts, which further supports education as a whole. This grant allows us to continue reaching across the state to bring quality, engaging professional development to schools, at no cost to them. This is particularly important during these tough budget times,” said Sandra Kent, OKA+ executive director.
