UCO to Host Innovation Author Steven Johnson, Nov. 14

As the University of Central Oklahoma prepares to open its newest building, the Donald Betz STEM Research and Learning Center, the campus community looks toward the future of interdisciplinary learning on its campus. To coincide with this new step in innovation, Central will host best-selling progress and innovation author Steven Johnson from 9-11 a.m. Nov. 14 in Nigh University Center (NUC), located on its Edmond campus.

Johnson will present on topics from his newest book, “Farsighted: How We Make the Decisions That Matter the Most,” from 9-10 a.m. in NUC Ballrooms A and B, followed by a book signing from 10-11 a.m. in NUC’s Heritage Room (326). The event, hosted by the Office of the President, Office of Academic Affairs and UCO Student Association, is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. Copies of “Farsighted” will be available for purchase at the event, courtesy of the UCO Barnes and Noble Bookstore.

In his latest work, Johnson explores once-in-a-lifetime decisions – ones that have lasting effects for years, or even centuries. “Farsighted” draws lessons from cognitive science, social psychology, military strategy, environmental planning and great works of literature.

“We are pleased to have Steven Johnson on our campus,” said UCO Provost John Barthell, Ph.D. “His work informs us on many interesting topics, including about the importance of innovation in our world and how to achieve it. His appearance alongside the opening ceremony for the new Donald Betz STEM Learning and Research Center is therefore very appropriate for this occasion in our campus’ history.”

In addition to “Farsighted,” Johnson authored “How We Got to Now: Six Innovations That Made the Modern World,” which debuted at No. 4 on The New York Times’ best-seller list; “Wonderland: How Play Made the Modern World;” and “Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation.” Chosen as one of Prospect magazine’s “Top Ten Brains of the Digital Future,” Johnson also is host of the podcast series “Wonderland,” about the past and future of play and innovation, as well as co-creator and host of the Emmy-nominated, six-part PBS series “How We Got to Now with Steven Johnson.”
