UCO College of Education and Professional Studies Dean Honored with Oklahoma Teacher of the Year Vision Award

James Machell, Ph.D., dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies (CEPS) at the University of Central Oklahoma, recently received the Oklahoma Teacher of the Year Vision Award from the National and State Teacher of the Year Chapter of Oklahoma.

The award, established to honor educators in Oklahoma whose background, foresight and wisdom have resulted in the enhancement of the teaching profession in the state, is selected by former Oklahoma Teacher of the Year winners.

"Overwhelmingly, the Oklahoma Teachers of the Year were honored to recognize Dean James Machell with this award due to his service, scholarship and advocacy in and for the teaching profession in Oklahoma,” said Stephanie Canada-Phillips, Ph.D., president of the Oklahoma National and State Teacher of the Year Chapter and assistant professor of kinesiology and health studies at Central.

Machell began his teaching career as a fourth-grade elementary school teacher in 1974 for Oklahoma City Public Schools and has served in a variety of educational leadership roles throughout his career. He joined UCO as the CEPS dean in 2005. In that role, he has helped to continue Central’s tradition of being home to one of the top teacher preparation programs in Oklahoma. Machell will retire from his position as dean at the end of June and will return to the classroom this fall as a professor in Central’s educational leadership program.

Past recipients of the Oklahoma Teacher of the Year Vision award include Sandy Garrett, former Oklahoma superintendent of public instruction, and Clarence G. Oliver, Jr., Ed.D., emeritus professor and former dean of the College of Education at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa Oklahoma.
