UCO to Honor 9/11 Victims with Remembrance Ceremony, Service Activities

The University of Central Oklahoma invites members of the Edmond and Oklahoma City metro communities to commemorate the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks alongside UCO students, faculty and staff with a remembrance ceremony at 9 a.m. Sept. 11 at the Blue Tent at Broncho Lake on Central’s campus. Broncho Lake is located near the center of campus, just north of the Nigh University Center.

Edmond City Council member and UCO alumnus Josh Moore will serve as keynote speaker for the ceremony. Moore received his bachelor’s degree in corporate communications from Central in 2001 and currently serves on the UCO Foundation Board of Trustees. He the owner/operator of Moore Quality Homes and Moore Quality Investments.

Immediately following the ceremony, those in attendance will plant approximately 3,000 American flags in the ground around Broncho Lake in remembrance of those who lost their lives on 9/11.

In addition to the remembrance ceremony, UCO student volunteers will deliver dinners to firehouses in Edmond and Oklahoma City in appreciation of the sacrifices of local first responders.

“Each year, the Volunteer and Service Learning Center takes great pride in providing a time for UCO and Oklahoma City metro residents to reflect and observe the sacrifices of those who were lost and those who united in response to the tragedy that occurred September 11th,” said Brian Blevins, coordinator for UCO’s Volunteer and Service Learning Center (VSLC).

“Our remembrance ceremony is an important time of reflection for all and delivering meals to our local firefighters reminds our students — many of whom were too young to remember the attacks in 2001 — of the daily sacrifices of those who protect and serve.”

For more information about the ceremony, contact the UCO VSLC at 405-974-2621 or volunteer@uco.edu.
