UCO Ranked in Top Ten of 'Best for Vets: Colleges 2020'

The University of Central Oklahoma again earned recognition as a top school for student veterans and active military, as The Military Times announced Central as No. 8 out of 134 surveyed four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. on its “Best for Vets: Colleges 2020” list.

Central jumped up one spot on the list, as The Military Times recognized UCO for its dedication to veterans for the fifth consecutive year.

UCO offers resources for student veterans through the Veterans Higher Education Resources and Opportunity Center (VetHERO). These resources aid student veterans with their academic, financial, physical and social needs.

In an effort to enhance the university’s existing veteran outreach, Central created two programs: the Veterans Upward Bound program serving pre-college veterans and the Student Support Services Serving America’s Leaders Using Transformative Education (SALUTE) program serving Central’s veterans who are first-generation college students. Both programs are federally funded via U.S. Department of Education grants. These programs are designed to encourage and assist veterans in successful admissions to and completion of postsecondary education via academic coaching, peer, faculty and community mentoring, and financial literacy.

“We very much appreciate the campus-wide support for creating innovative collaboration networks, like the VetHERO Center, to ease the military to civilian transition for our student veterans,” said Victoria Arnold Harrel, Ed.D., executive director of TRIO Student Services at Central.
