UCO Dedicates ‘Tried and True’ Veterans Memorial Statue

The University of Central Oklahoma recently dedicated a memorial statue in honor of past, present and future military-connected students, faculty and staff. The statue was unveiled during Central’s Veterans Day ceremony, Nov. 10.

The memorial statue is a representation of the two sides of military-connected students. It features two Central students, both veterans, that died during combat, 2nd Lt. Jered Ewy of the Oklahoma Army National Guard and Sgt. Ryan Wood of the Army’s First Infantry Division, 26th Battalion.

The memorial statue was a joint effort of Central’s Student Government Association, UCOSA and the City of Edmond Visual Arts Commission.

“After many conversations with UCO’s Student Veteran Association, UCOSA felt that it was important to recognize all the past, current and future Bronchos with a physical memorial on the campus,” said Cole Stanley, associate vice president of Student Affairs.

“In the fall of 2017, UCOSA passed legislation to award $60,000 to this project. After some further research, we found that the City of Edmond had a committee that could allocate funding to support public art within the city. The journey took a while to get the statue dedicated –– but I think we can all agree that it is beautiful and wonderful tribute to all Bronchos who have and will serve our country.”

The sculpture, titled “Tried and True,” was commissioned by National Sculptors’ Guild Fellow Gary Alsum.

“This statue is a place for students, faculty, staff and friends to reflect and to remember all UCO veterans. It honors the service and sacrifice of those who paid the ultimate price, those still serving and those who will serve in the future,” said Tom Mcshane, director of UCO’s Serving America’s Leaders Using Transformative Education (SALUTE) Veteran Programs.
